I had a watery eyed moment today....
I was helping a buddy of mine re-do a basement floor and we we're running the cement saws all day long, the dust got so chokingly thick we couldn't see eachother 2 feet away. Our breathing units kept getting clogged up and we had no way to clean them so we just braved through it. The dust was so fine it came right through our filters and into our lungs and noses. It was bad, really bad so we only worked for about 10 hours but when we came upstairs to pack up for the day we we're shocked when we looked in the mirror. My buddy couldn't believe how dusty we we're...but my mind strayed elsewhere. For some reason it instantly triggered the thought of the World Trade Center and the devastation of the attacks. We looked like we just walked off from ground zero, everything was covered in fine gray dust...our hair, faces and clothes. All I could think about we're the rescue workers whos' courage in my mind, granted them everlasting life...even know they're suffering this very moment some even dying from respiratory illness and disease caused from the horrible condisions at ground zero. I can't imagine how hard it must be for them or their families, to be punished for their selfless sacrifice to save lives. All they wanted to do was help people and they did so without hesitation. Later we decided to grab some grub but my nose and throat we're so clogged with dust that my hunger left me and I decided to go home and crash. 10 short hours of working in a dust filled basement messed me up bad...Can you imagine what the average day of a rescue/clean up worker was like working through the night and for months at a time in life threatening conditions contaminated with chemicals and any other risk imaginable. I can't thank them enough, everyone Police, Firefighter, and even Soldiers who purchase freedom with their blood for the sake of people they don't even know. One thing explains these brave Americans and I found out when I once asked a person "How?" in which he replied "It takes a special breed....It takes an American."
