(edit: also, I don't consider racing going in a straight line, take Nuerburgring for example) Autos are more effective on drag and bracket, as said before. For road tracks, I'd definitely take a stick. Why don't you consider drag/bracket racing actual racing? Getting a car to do a quarter mile under 8 seconds isn't really that easy, nor cheap. Handling a car doing 200 mph for 8 seconds isn't easy either. You can see that by the 100's of videos of cars doing fine and completely flipping out of no where. Damn fine camaro man. Is that a glass hood? or did you just put the pins in for looks? Have you ran it yet? If you haven't already found it, I found this site when I was going to buy a 1980 berlinetta. It's extremely helpful. www.nastyz28.com

Manual, automatic... bah, I can't wait until I put a his/hers dualgate shifter in my cutlass. IT's the best of both worlds(kinda).

Yeah cause them video games are all based on real life, everything in a video game is true, .... But because on every racing video game, automatic is for "beginners" and manual is for "advanced".... This is done becuase manual is harder to use then automatic thus it is under advanced in video games. El is completely right as well ALL PRAISE EL

Sheesh, some people need to learn some stuff. Automatics have two advantages in drag racing: 1.) A good torque converter can amplify the torque produced in a car. Something needed in a drag race. 2.) In a boosted situation, you don't loose boost when an automatic shifts.
That said, in any other situation, a manual is better, and offers more control.
And piratevalkyrie, an expensive automatic will shift very very fast, however, if you get a paddleshift F1 tranny, you'll shift even faster. It's all about how much money you want to put into it.
Personally, I hate driving an auto just because a manual is second nature to me, and I generally shift later than most automatics do. I've never owned an auto, and getting stuck driving one isn't fun. However, if you're building a car for the hole-shot, especially if you're running a turbo, I'd go with an automatic.
Edit: Oh, another bad thing about an auto is it will rob about 5-10% more power from your engine than a standard tranny will, i.e. you'll have a 20-25% loss of power from the crank to the wheels opposed to a 10-15% loss.

Didnt pick the auto, it came with it. However, my Camaro has a Hurst V-matic shifter and the tranny has a manual valve body. These allow you to control when it shifts like the paddleshift only it's not on the steering wheel. Also you can engine brake.
Orion- I love nastyz28 also, yes it is a 'glass hood. Gunslinger- great car, great hair Dynoing it on Friday.

Thank you for all your support and praises I am NOT a god General B JummyMethod: I did NOT mention the advantages of an auto with a turbo, cause the camaro does not have a "hair dryer". you are correct BTW Stop the transmission arguement now. Any other trans related posts (except those SPECIFICLY about the camaro) from here in WILL be deleted. Have fun, and my the internal combustion gods hydorcoarbon, compression, and ignition smile on you when you dyno the car

Hahaha,
Have I been gone so long that no longer is my humor appreciated?
I thought I laid the sarcasm on pretty thick with the video game comment..
By the way.
If you're wondering why I haven't been posting....
I was on Krypton with Superman.
P.S. Why are we all praising you now, El? Was SEMIA all a grand scheme to develop the armies for your cult? You want me to join your fight club? What?
