Hi All,
my name is Pat Cotter, I'm brand new to airsoft, just bought my first gun on impulse because I've been wanting to get into it for ages, but I didn't turn 18 until April. I'm really interested in getting into some friendly games, even though I'm sure the gun I've got is pretty sub par, as I didn't pay much for it. So out of curiosity, aside from the gun and pellets, what other stuff do I need to start playing? Furthermore, are there events that pop up that anyone can attend, or is this the kind of thing where I'd really need to find a team first?
Thanks alot

Welcome Jester. There are plenty of rec games during the summer. Most of the time the teams are set up right then and there and off you go to have fun. What replica did you buy? How much did you spend? You will need some camo (NO REALTREE), Spare magazines (Hicaps are frowned upon at most events) and a speedloader, and A tactical vest of some sort to hold all those magazines and speedloader. Depending on the replica you have, you may want a spare battery or two. larger batteries hold up well for a full days airsofting. Mini and stick type batteries have to be swapped out 2 or 3 times (sometimes more) through the day. I have 3 stick batteries for my G3 (real stock conversion, can't use A large Batt )

Mine's actually a spring loaded P.389A replica pistol. I think it retails between $20 and $30, I got it for a little less than that. As far as camo goes, are we talking full body? I know that can get pretty pricey, especially if I'd need to get multiple types. As far as mags and a speedloader, are there any shops in the Ann Arbor area that have that stuff available? Or will I need to do online ordering? I did read the stickies, so I know I need eye/face protection as well, and I have a little bit better idea of what to expect.

For the most part, you're going to want to order stuff online. The closest shops that have anything even resembling high end (or really even mid level) airsoft stuff are in Kalamazoo and Southfield. You can make the drive, but neither store keeps a huge inventory (there's no way they could and make any money ever), so they might not have a lot of what you need. Check out Michigan Airsoft (linked on the home page here) to find more information on reliable retailers and what not. Otherwise, El is pretty much dead on. For eye protection, get these: www.botachtactical.com/bolt8gog.htmlThey're $70 goggles on a ridiculous sale. They don't fog much, they're highly comfortable, and better than just about anything else you're going to find short of ESS Turbofans for 5 times the price. The only thing they're not good for is if you wear glasses. They're low profile, so you can't fit them under the goggles. However, you can get these: www.botachtactical.com/bolatgog.html and they'll work great. Eye protection is the most important piece of equipment you'll buy in airsoft, so make sure you get something that meets the safety standards, but is also up to your personal standards. You can get a shitty paintball mask for $20, but it's going to cause a lot of problems. Since you will be wearing these goggles every time you step out onto the airsoft field, it's really worth it to invest some money into them.

Also, as far as your replica is concerned, you'll be own gunned using your pistol. I suggest looking into a AEG. A good entry level AEG will run around $100.
Welcome to the forums.

I figure that's true, but I'm not spending $100 on a replica until I'm sure I'll like the sport, as I'm also considering paintball, another pricey thing to get into. So at this point I want to make sure I like it before I spend the money, if that means getting destroyed a few times to get a feel for it, that's fine with me.

By all means shop the sport before you shop the gear. Most people here are friendly and will understand you not wanting to drop the cash until you know if you are interested. Come on out try some events.
